See full gallery on TechnoBuffaloVirgin Galactic will help a company named Boom build a new supersonic jet that, Boom hopes, will be able to travel from New York to London in just 3.4 hours. Civilians haven’t been able to fly supersonic jets commercially since the retirement of the Concorde.
According to Denver Post, which recently covered news that Boom plans to build the planes in Colorado, Virgin Galactic will help Boom develop its aircraft and will acquire 10 of the planes once they’re finished. That suggests that Virgin Galactic or, perhaps a commercial Virgin airline such as Virgin Atlantic, will fly customers on supersonic jets in the not-so-distant future. Another carrier will buy 15 additional planes, which means consumers will have a choice regarding who to fly with.
And, unlike flights on the Concorde which were prohibitively expensive for Joe Consumer to fly, these flights will actually be affordable, Boom says.
“We’re building a supersonic airplane that’s actually affordable to fly,” Boom CEO Blake Scholl told Denver Post. You’ll still need to work a bit of overtime, however, since tickets are expected to cost about $5,000 per round trip. That’s about a quarter of the price of a similar ticket on the Concorde.
Boom hasn’t said when the first planes will be completed, so you have plenty of time to pad the piggy bank with some extra bacon.
