When Ben Affleck was announced as the new Batman, many people immediately wrote the actor off. And I get it: following in Christian Bale’s footsteps would be hard for anyone, let alone an actor who willingly did a movie called Gigli.
However, in Batman v Superman, Affleck proved the doubters wrong and absolutely owned the role of Bruce Wayne/Batman. Now it sounds like he is indeed going to star in a standalone Batman movie written and directed by—you guessed it—Ben Affleck.
In a new Hollywood Reporter story, William Morris Endeavor co-CEO Patrick Whitesell touches on Affleck’s involvement in the greater DC Cinematic Universe, namely, how many movies he’ll appear in.
“He’s contracted to do at least Justice League One and Two, so at least three times wearing the cape,” Whitesell said. Later on, in the same interview, Whitesell added that Affleck has written a standalone script that’s a “really cool” Batman idea.
Affleck is already confirmed to make a cameo appearance in Suicide Squad, so it would seem he’s open to more opportunities outside of the Justice League. Rumors of a standalone Batman film stretch as far back as last summer and given the praise he’s receiving for his more brutal portrayal of the Dark Knight, it’s no surprise to hear something is in the works.
