Surely Luke Skywalker is Rey’s dad, right? Well, not according to director J.J. Abrams, who on Friday said neither of Rey’s parents are in Star Wars: The Force Awakens.
Have you seen Rey’s parents?
If you’re keeping track, that rules out Luke, Leia, Han, and anyone else who appeared in the movie. Yes, it even rules out R2-D2. We know she was left on Jakku at a very young age, but we don’t know by whom. What events led up to that moment? Did it have to do with her Force sensitivity?
Abrams has already said he knows who Rey’s parents are, but of course he didn’t name any names. It’s unclear, however, if they’ll show up in Episode VIII, which comes out at the end of next year.
Daisy Ridley, the actress who plays Rey, recently said she didn’t think learning who the character’s parents are is very “important,” but she may have been deflecting. The current favorite theory is that Jyn Erso, recently introduced as the leading character of Rogue One, might be Rey’s mom.
There are two more movies in the new Star Wars trilogy, so there’s still plenty to come. Hopefully, we’ll find out sooner rather than later.
