What are the chances of Spider-Man appearing in a movie with Deadpool? Not very good but new comments suggest it could happen.
Fox currently owns the movie rights to select X-Men characters while Disney and Sony have a deal allowing Spidey to show up in the MCU. According to Deadpool director Tim Miller, however, bridges are slowly being built for a possible crossover.
Last year, Sony (which has the movie rights for Spider-Man) made a deal with Marvel Studios that will allow the character to appear in upcoming MCU films. Well, Miller apparently sees a similar deal happening with Marvel/Sony and Fox; the fact that these big executives could be open to the idea is tantalizing for fans.
Here’s what Simon Kinberg, longtime X-Men producer, had to add:
With all of the deals that have recently started happening, we asked if [Fox] could get visitation rights to Sony’s friendly neighborhood Spider-Man. I would love to see it. Both of us are close with [Marel’s] Kevin [Feige], we respect and love Kevin. If it were even remotely possible, we will find a way ‘cause we would love to see it.
Having Ryan Reynolds and Tom Holland, who critics have praised as the best part of Civil War, on screen together would be an epic team-up. But just because Kinberg says he would love to see it doesn’t mean it’s going to happen. I have an idea of how they might expedite the process: Fox should hands rights to the Fantastic Four back to Marvel and then they can talk about sharing Spider-Man.
In the comics, Deadpool is one of Spider-Man’s biggest fans, so imagine how that might play out with Ryan Reynolds geeking out even though he’s a powerful superhuman himself. With the right creative team involved, it just might be too much for fans to handle.
We shouldn’t expect anything to happen in Deadpool 2 or even Spider-Man’s own solo movie next year. But imagine if a deal was reached. That might trump any possible combination coming to the MCU in Phase 3 and beyond.
