Dwayne Johnson has officially boarded the Jumanji remake, the actor revealed on Friday. The news comes on the back of speculation that he and Kevin Hart would be joining the film; Hart’s involvement hasn’t yet been confirmed.
It’s not a particularly great film but Jumanji still holds a special place in a lot of people’s hearts, particularly for those who grew up in the 90s (me!). It was perfect for what it was and provided a fun escape. Even to this day, the special effects hold up pretty well, so it’s easy for today’s generation to pick up and watch.
That said, even though Johnson has undeniable charm and star power, I have conflicted feelings about hearing Jumanji is getting remade. For one, there’s no replacing Robin Williams, no matter how many big stars you lump into a film. Two, there was something so magical about the original that will probably get lost in the hustle to capitalize on the beloved property.
That said, I’m hopeful. If you haven’t seen the original, it’s a fun movie. I hope the charm of the first won’t be ignored when the remake hits.
