Forget Mountain Dew Code Red, the real nerd libation is Hi-C’s Ecto Cooler, a drink launched in 1987 as a tie-in to The Real Ghostbusters animated series. It was probably toxic and definitely made your pee turn green but that was just a minor side effect for a beverage that kids gulped like water.
The drink’s return is part of a promotional tie-in for the upcoming Ghostbusters reboot arriving this summer. Aside from the proton pack and the Stay Puft Marshmallow Man, Ecto Cooler is perhaps the most nostalgic Ghostbusters product to ever exist—or maybe that’s just the drink’s sugar-induced nausea speaking.
Even though The Real Ghostbusters ended in 1991, Ecto Cooler actually continued to sell until 2001 when it was axed for good. When Ecto Cooler returns on May 30, it’ll be available in 6-ounce juice boxes and 11.5-ounce aluminum cans that will turn green when cold.
If you’ve never had Ecto Cooler, prepare to taste the nectar of the gods. But don’t blame me if you get hooked.
