The Force Awakens was released for purchase on April 5 while The Walking Dead Season 6 finale spiked sales of the AMC series. Both earned top spots for movies and TV shows on Google Play’s April chart. Other chart-toppers include The Weeknd, Prince, Fear of the Walking Dead and The Revenant.
The Force Awakens is the blockbuster you expect to be the number one movie, but behind it was Leonardo DiCaprios’s The Revenant, which earned him the Best Actor Oscar. On the music side, after Prince’s untimely passing his music shot up the charts claiming three of the top five purchased albums. The Weeknd’s ‘The Hills” and “Can’t Feel My Face” bookend the Top 5 Streamed Songs.
Some of the categories were influenced by the return of popular brands like MLB and Game of Thrones, with HBO Now topping the Trending Apps chart and MLB.com at Bat coming in third place. The rise of the face swapping phenomenon also made an impression with Face Changer 2 coming in just behind HBO Now in second place.
