After making a cameo appearance in X-Men: Apocalypse, Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine will complete his cinematic trilogy in 2017, ending with a film reports claim will follow the Old Man Logan storyline. With that, Fox is aiming for an R-rating, which we’ve heard uttered by unnamed sources multiple times in the past. Now, according to long-time X-Men producer Simon Kinberg, the film will indeed aim for more mature audiences.

Speaking to Collider, Kinberg confirmed the film’s rating, and also revealed how the filmmakers are hoping to achieve a specific tone.

“It’s a very radical, bold, different Wolverine than you’ve ever seen in any of these movies,” Kinberg explained. Later in the interview he went on to say, “It’s violent, it’s kind of like a western in its tone. It’s just a very cool, different film.”

Kinberg also revealed the movie will take place in the future, and acknowledged that it could potentially feature Patrick Stewart’s Professor X. It’s unclear how much Deadpool’s success has to do with Wolverine 3’s R-rating, but it sure appears as though Fox was emboldened by that movie’s achievements. More than that, however, the storyline the filmmakers are supposedly following is violent in its own right; Old Man Logan features plenty of murder and decapitation.

We’ve seen Jackman’s Wolverine grow before our very eyes over the years, beginning with X-Men all the way back in the year 2000. With Wolverine 3 being his last (supposed) film before he hangs up his claws, it sure sounds like Fox wants to give him the proper send-off.
