Microsoft is reportedly planning to launch a Web version of Xbox Music as early as next week, giving subscribers another (much more convenient) way of accessing the service. According to The Verge, the more accessible Web-based version means those not confined in Microsoft’s bubble—Xbox 360, Windows 8 and Windows Phone 8—can use the Spotify-like streaming service on any platform they like. It’s a more freeing approach, and continues on Microsoft’s more recent philosophy of introducing its own content to other competing ecosystems.
While there’s still no iOS or Android counterparts, opening up to the Web is obviously a big step toward a more open Xbox Music future. With iTunes Radio ready to hit the market, and Google’s own All Access service on Android and the Web, it seemed only a matter of time before Microsoft made a change. Sources speaking with The Verge claim that, once the Web version is available, it’ll work very similarly to Spotify’s own browser option.
Microsoft has a Build developer conference on June 26, so it’s possible we’ll hear an official announcement then. But the main gist is that Xbox Music will be available more widely starting sometime next week, giving consumers yet another streaming music option. Once the Web version does launch, Microsoft will also update the Xbox Music app for Windows 8.1, which will include a new design and improve discoverability, source said.
