Donald Glover, known by many as Troy Barnes in Community, is reportedly joining Marvel’s Spider-Man: Homecoming, according to The Hollywood Reporter. The upcoming reboot will be a collaboration between Marvel and Sony, and feature a younger version of the web-slinger, who we briefly saw in Captain America: Civil War.
Glover’s role is currently being kept a secret, so we’re not sure how big of a part he’ll actually play. Casting for the film has largely been kept under wraps though rumors suggest Michael Keaton could play the main villain, alleged to be Vulture. Robert Downey Jr.’s Tony Stark has already been confirmed, as has Marisa Tomei’s Aunt May.
What’s notable about Glover’s casting is that many fans of the actor/musician lobbied for him to play Spider-Man before Andrew Garfield was eventually cast in Sony’s The Amazing Spider-Man; even Spider-Man creator Stan Lee supported the campaign, but Glover wasn’t even awarded an audition. Eventually, Glover would go on to lend his voice to Miles Morales, an alternate version of Spider-Man, for two episodes in 2015.
Since Glover’s casting is being kept secret, it’s unclear if his involvement will be confined to Spider-Man’s solo flick, or if he’ll sign on for a multi-picture deal. It’s unlikely he’ll be involved beyond Homecoming, but we’ll have to wait and see once Sony reveals more details.
Spider-Man: Homecoming is scheduled to hit theaters on July 7, 2017.
