An upcoming sequel to the Japanese horror film series Ringu (best know in the U.S. for its America adaptation, The Ring) will offer the first ever 4D smartphone experience thanks to a mobile app that promises to add a fourth “dimension” to the scary movie. Instead of being told to turn off their phones, movie-goers will get an enhanced experienced right on their devices, though hopefully they’ll still switch their handsets to Airplane Mode to block distracting calls, texts and notifications.
In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Yasunori Minomata described how the app will work, though he wouldn’t reveal whether the gimmick will tie-in with the plot from the last film in the Ringu series, Sadako 3D, in which a character is trapped inside a smartphone by supernatural forces.
“The 4D smartphone application is still in development, but it will include flashes, sounds, vibrations and things appearing on the smartphone screen,” Minomata said, suggesting that the app may be an afterthought to the actual film.
The upcoming Ringu sequel, Sadako 3D 2, will hit Japanese movie theaters on August 30, though it’s unclear if the film and its 4D experience will get an international release.[Source: Hollywood Reporter]
