See full gallery on TechnoBuffaloHBO this week announced season 7 of Game of Thrones will return later than expected, and it’ll be shorter, too. Production of the seven-episode seventh season will begin later this summer, with an expected debut currently slated for summer 2017. Game of Thrones typically debuts in April, which means fans will have to wait a little longer than usual.
According to HBO president Casey Bloys, the show’s story will be “better served” by season 7’s later-than-usual arrival.
“Now that winter has arrived on Game of Thrones, executive producers David Benioff and D.B. Weiss felt that the storylines of the next season would be better served by starting production a little later than usual, when the weather is changing,” Bloys said.
Many people feared the worst when Benioff said the lack of winter weather would push the upcoming season’s production back, and now those fears are being realized. Who knew sunny skies would be such a detriment? Much of season 7 will be shot in Northern Ireland, with other portions being shot in Space and Iceland, according to Bloys.
While the show’s late debut will no doubt upset fans, that just means we have more time to speculate about what’s going to happen next. There will be a Game of Thrones panel at Comic-Con later this week, but I don’t expect HBO to discuss season 7 details. We’ll update you should anything big break.
