Alden Ehrenreich’s turn as the most famous smuggler in the galaxy will apparently extend to a three-picture deal if the Han Solo spinoff does well (which it will). According to the New York Daily News, Disney has quietly assured the actor that he’ll be in the role for years to come should these planned anthology movies work out.
The 26-year-old actor was officially unveiled to the press at Disney’s Star Wars Celebration last week, confirming months of rumors about Ehrenreich’s involvement.
“There is a real sense of excitement around the Han Solo movie and its potential,” a source told NY Daily News. “Given that Han’s early adventures do not need to be tied to the Empire, it leaves story lines open with the opportunity to really give fans something different. They can explore new galaxies and crazy creatures and bring in a wide array of new characters.”
Little has been unveiled about the upcoming Han Solo spinoff so far, so we’re not entirely sure which direction Disney plans to take the character. As of now, all we know is that Lawrence Kasdan and his son, Jake Kasdan, are working on the script; Chris Miller and Phil Lord, meanwhile, are on deck to direct.
The first anthology film, Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, is set for a Dec. 16, 2016 release, while the Han Solo movie starring Ehrenreich will hit theaters on May 25, 2018.
