Even though we already know what happened to Robin in the DC Cinematic Universe, theories abound about the character’s fate. Did he actually die? Or is he off on some tropical island taking a vacation? With Suicide Squad coming out next week, people are still convinced Jared Leto’s Joker is Batman’s former sidekick, but according to director David Ayer, that just isn’t the case.
First, let’s see what Zack Snyder had to say about Robin’s death and why his suit was on display in Batman’s batcave:
In my mind, it was that Robin had died about 10 years earlier in some run in with a young Joker. So that was an interesting thing to me. Sorta a fun backstory to play with. I felt like there had been loss and there had been sacrifice.
Now, Ayer has once and for all confirmed that Joker is not Robin, which means you can put those theories to rest. In an interview with WSVN-TV in Miami at an event for the film, Ayer was asked what the craziest rumor he heard was while filming the movie, to which he replied, “That the Joker is Jason Todd.”
“It ain’t the case,” Ayer said. “He’s not.”
Whether we’ll get some sort of in-universe explanation as to what happened to Robin remains unclear. There is a possibility the character could have a small role in Ben Affleck’s Batman movie though that’s just speculation on our part. Who knows, maybe even Suicide Squad will have a reference to the fallen hero.
