The showrunners of Game of Thrones have already hinted the end of the hit show was near, and now we have definitive confirmation. At the Television Critics Association on Saturday, president of programming Casey Bloys said Game of Thrones will indeed end with season 8. The news comes after HBO confirmed season 7 will also be shorter than usual.

Back in June, David Benioff, one of the head honchos of Game of Thrones, said they only had two more seasons planned—something they had envisioned from the start. “From pretty close to the beginning, we talked about doing this in 70-75 hours, and that’s what we’ll end up with. Call it 73 for now,” Benioff said.

Bloys admitted he’d love to see the show go on for “10 more seasons,” but is trusting the judgement of Benioff and D.B. Weiss to end the show when it feels right. From the beginning, Benioff said he wanted something that didn’t stay past its welcome.

“We wanted it to be one giant story, without padding it out to add an extra 10 hours, or because people are still watching it,” Benioff said in June. “We wanted something where, if people watched it end to end, it would make sense as one continuous story.”

Couple this news with the delayed arrival of season 7 and it’s a pretty tough time to be a fan of Game of Thrones.
