USA Network will air a third season of Mr. Robot, Deadline, said on Tuesday.
The news doesn’t come as a huge surprise. Season two of Mr. Robot has earned mixed reviews and its ratings are down somewhat as a result, but the first season is still racking up awards. The show also brings a new audience to USA Network; the company could build on that momentum to launch other prestige dramas.
“We couldn’t be more proud of Mr. Robot, a series that has pushed boundaries, captured the cultural zeitgeist, and been honored as one of the best dramas on television,” said Chris McCumber, president of entertainment networks for USA Network’s parent company NBCUniversal. “Midway through its second season, Mr. Robot continues to break new ground and open up new opportunities for the network.”
Mr. Robot came out of the gate strong with an amazing first season. The second season has meandered and dragged a bit so far, though there’s still plenty to enjoy as the show wraps up loose ends from last year and explores new concepts. It’s nice to know Mr. Robot won’t need to conclude the entire story at the end of this season, but we’re still not sure it will rebound from its sophomore slump.
