There’s been a lot of talk about how director Rian Johnson (Looper, Brick) is shifting the tone of Star Wars: Episode VIII, and new comments from actor Adam Driver confirms the film is doing just that. However, just because the tone is shifting doesn’t mean the movie will be dark.
While speaking to Collider, Driver talked about Johnson’s skills as a writer and how the script has helped the actor better understand his character, Kylo Ren.
“I learned a lot of things about my character through his writing,” Driver explained. “Some things we talked about before and some things we didn’t. He was working on Episode VIII while we were still working on the first one. To understand what J.J. was doing and take ownership from there is kind of a remarkable thing.”
With the introduction of all these new characters out of the way, it sounds like Johnson’s goal is to flesh out who they are and how they fit into the larger Skywalker saga. That means, of course, shifting the upbeat tone of Episode VII to something that’s not necessarily dark, but different.
“It’s similar to how The Empire Strikes Back has a different tone,” Driver said. “For that people always go ‘ooooh, it’s dark’ but I don’t know that it necessarily is. It’s just different in tone in a way that I think is great and necessary but also very clear.”
Of course, Driver’s comments basically repeat what we’ve heard already, so we’re not any closer to learning what Episode VIII is about. And with the movie not set to come out until December 2017, it’ll be quite a while before we learn any concrete details.
