See full gallery on TechnoBuffaloWe already learned a surprising amount of the shots in Captain America: Civil War were created in post, but we never realized the kind of work that goes into a single character. Take, for example, Chadwick Boseman’s Black Panther costume.
While the filmmakers had Boseman and the stuntmen wear a practical Black Panther suit, the wizards at Industrial Light & Magic gave it that extra oomph. Co-director Joe Russo explains:
We had an outfit that we used on set. It’s impossible when you’re talking about an otherworldly outfit like the one that Panther wears, which has a certain luminescence to it because it’s made of a woven metal. We could never afford to construct an outfit like that that an actor or stunt player could move around in without sweating to death or that would capture the luminescence that we need. So what we ended up doing in post is ILM came in and painted over Chadwick and the stuntman. The outfit is completely CG.
I mean, there are plenty of situations when it’s obvious CG was used in Captain America, especially for characters such as Iron Man and Spider-Man. Turns out, literally every frame of Black Panther’s outfit is CG. That’s some truly impressive artistic work.
With superhero movies becoming more and more spectacular, CG is playing an integral role in making these breathtaking action scenes more believable. All the better if we don’t even realize what we’re looking at was created using computers.
With CG improving all the time, I wonder how spectacular he’ll look when his solo movie rolls around in 2018.
