Bad news, Adventure Time fans. The long-running Cartoon Network series is coming to an end in 2018, though there’s still plenty of new episodes, miniseries and specials coming down the pipeline before the series finale.
Cartoon Network notes that by the time the show ends it will have racked up “142 half-hours of content.” Adventure Time is currently wrapping up its seventh season, though there’s still no air date for the two-part season finale. Season 8 is expected to premiere in late 2016. Season 9 is currently in production.
After that, it’s over.
Adventure Time first hit the air in 2010 and become a huge hit for Cartoon Network. The show takes place in a magical post-dystopic version of Earth called The Land of Ooo and follows the adventure of Finn the Human (one of the last of his kind) and a talking dog named Jake that can transform into any shape. It also features a huge raft of supporting characters, including fan-favorites like Ice King, Marceline and BMO.
The show may be coming to an end, but it’s already left its mark on pop culture. Adventure Time’s original art style and irreverent humor have spawned a growing list of new cartoon series. It even made an appearance in a recent Simpsons couch gag, cementing its spot in cartoon history.
