It was already clear Thor: Ragnarok wouldn’t be like other movies in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and now the film is being described as Marvel’s “most out there.”

Director Taika Waititi participated in a Reddit AMA over the weekend and revealed what fans can expect from the upcoming “intergalactic road trip” film.

The good news is that Marvel has been very open to Waititi’s style of humor. If you’ve seen What We Do in the Shadows or Hunt for the Wilderpeople, you know what this means. The Thor mockumentary is also a good example of Waititi’s humor.

“You can expect a Taika-esque tone,” Waititi explained. “[Marvel’s] been very accepting of my style.”

Waititi went on to say the tone of Ragnarok will be “out there” and “crazy,” calling it “one of the most adventurous” in the MCU. Apparently, the film is based on the Planet Hulk storyline and features plenty of gladiator fights.

Add in Waititi’s brand of humor and it’s easy to see why the movie’s being described as “out there.”

Waititi said that his approach to Ragnarok was to basically ignore the other Thor films.

A different Marvel film

Marvel has taken a lot of risks over the years and Thor: Ragnarok sounds like its biggest yet. Not because of the content—audiences will watch Thor and Hulk battle as gladiators all day. But because Waititi isn’t a well-known director and his style of humor might not appeal to everyone.

The fact that the studio is allowing Waititi to make the movie he wants could pay dividends, however, especially if it has the same humor as the mockumentary Marvel released in August.
