The dynamic between Han Solo and Lando Calrissian just took an all-new turn. Lucasfilm on Friday confirmed Donald Glover (Atlanta) will play the role of young Lando Calrissian, the character made famous by Billy Dee Williams back in the 80s.
Glover’s name has been attached to the role for months now, but no confirmation was ever made. Last we heard, Glover was Lucasfilm’s top choice but the studio still wanted to keep its options open. Well, Glover has officially been confirmed for the role, proving that his charm, wit, and skill as an actor impressed the powers that be.
Glover joins Alden Ehrenreich, who was confirmed as the young Han Solo earlier this year. StarWars.com had this to say about Glover’s casting:
This new film depicts Lando in his formative years as a scoundrel on the rise in the galaxy’s underworld—years before the events involving Han, Leia, and Darth Vader in The Empire Strikes Back and his rise to Rebel hero in Return of the Jedi.
In the Skywalker saga, Calrissian is an administrator of Cloud City whose main concern is keeping the Empire out of his affairs. He later becomes embroiled in the drama, however, and before he knows it, he betrays Han.
Directed by Phil Lord and Chris Miller, the untitled Han Solo film is scheduled for a 2018 release.
