Johnny Depp, never one to shy away from eccentric roles, is joining the wizard world of Harry Potter.
According to Deadline, the actor will play a prominent role in the upcoming sequel to Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them. The first movie, which Depp will apparently appear in as a secret character, isn’t out until Nov. 18.
With five movies planned for the expanded Harry Potter universe, Warner Bros. clearly has no problem getting its ducks in a row.
Here’s where we start getting into potential spoilers territory. You’ve been warned.
Previous reports have suggested a key Harry Potter character would appear in Fantastic Beasts. Couple that with a video from actor Ezra Miller this week talking about the duel between Albus Dumbledore and Gellert Grindelwald, and the narrative starts coming into focus.
That duel is what made Dumbledore a legend and gave him the Elder Wand. Could we see this moment unfold on the big screen? It sounds like fans of the Harry Potter franchise are in for a real treat.
Will Depp play Grindelwald?
Now, it just becomes a matter of who Depp will play. I’m not so sure Depp matches the sophistication of a Dumbledore, so I wouldn’t be surprised to see him play Grindelwald—if, indeed, that is what happens.
(What if he just surprises everyone with a Captain Jack Sparrow crossover?)
As we near the release of Fantastic Beasts, fans certainly have a lot to mull over. When the film hits theaters, keep your eyes peeled for Depp, because Deadline says he’ll have a tiny cameo before having his role expanded in the sequel, which currently doesn’t have a release date.
Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them is scheduled to hit theaters on Nov. 18.
