Spider-Man has gone through his ups and downs in the past fifteen years. The highs involved massive box office numbers but the lows delivered three different web-slingers. The most recent take on Spidey is by Tom Holland, who made a splash introducing the character in Captain America: Civil War.
Winning a role like this can be a life-changing achievement and should warrant a special announcement, shouldn’t it? Apparently not because Holland found out he won the role in the most normal way possible—by perusing through Instagram.
“I was in bed scrolling Instagram,”said Tom Holland in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter. “It had been about a month since my audition. And Marvel just posted a photo saying to go to our website to find out who the next Spider-Man is. I went on the Marvel website on my computer and there it was: ‘The new Spider-Man is Tom Holland. I went ballistic, like absolutely nuts.'”
That’s a pretty normal, if not unspectacular, way to find out you’re the next Spider-Man.
After going through some rough times, Sony opted to reboot the Spider-Man franchise with Marvel’s help. Casting Tom Holland and exploring Peter Parker’s teenage years seems like a perfect way to breathe new life into the character. His involvement with the Avengers is also a great way to rebuild some goodwill for the franchise.
The Instagram post he mentions is the one below, posted 16 months ago.
You can see Tom Holland as the web-slinger again in Spider-Man: Homecoming, out next summer.
