Valerian trailer – Luc Besson’s latest sci-fi epic

After ages of keeping it under wraps, we’re finally seeing footage from Luc Besson’s latest film, Valerian.

Luc Besson – best known for films such as The Fifth Element, Leon and Lucy – is back with another sci-fi epic. Based on the European graphic novels Valerian and Laureline, Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets looks as though it will be another visual feast when it hits theaters next summer.

Is Valerian too much of the same?

While Valerian looks amazing, it also feels a lot like The Fifth Element in this first trailer. A lot of the shots feel like you could drop Bruce Willis in his cab and it wouldn’t feel the least bit out of place.

The story, as well, sounds somewhat the same judging by the official synopsis. It’s yet another story where the existence of the human race is at stake.

Valerian (Dane DeHaan) and Laureline (Cara Delevingne) are special operatives for the government of the human territories charged with maintaining order throughout the universe.

Under directive from their Commander (Clive Owen), Valerian and Laureline embark on a mission to the breathtaking intergalactic city of Alpha, an ever-expanding metropolis comprised of thousands of different species from all four corners of the universe. Alpha’s seventeen million inhabitants have converged over time- uniting their talents, technology and resources for the betterment of all. Unfortunately, not everyone on Alpha shares in these same objectives; in fact, unseen forces are at work, placing our race in great danger.

Despite the similarities, I don’t think many people will care. The film looks amazing, and even when Besson makes a lower quality film, it ends up being at least entertaining.

Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets opens next summer on July 21.
