Marvel Studios cozied up with Sony for a deal that brought Spider-Man to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Wouldn’t it be great if Marvel negotiated something similar with Fox? Well, the writers of Deadpool say that has already happened.
In a Deadpool Q&A over the weekend, writers Paul Wernick and Rhett Reese revealed Marvel and Fox worked out a mutually beneficial deal several months back—and you’ve already seen the results.
As Wernick and Reese tell it, Fox really wanted to use Negasonic Teenage Warhead in Deadpool, but they were intent on giving her different powers. (In the comics, she’s psychic as opposed to explosive.) So, in order to do that, they had to clear it with Marvel first.
Marvel gave the green light, but only if Fox would let Marvel use Ego the Living Planet for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2.
Apparently, Wernick and Reese loved the name of Negasonic Teenage Warhead so much they refused to use anyone else.
When can Wolverine come to the MCU?
Both Negasonic and Ego are relatively obscure, even by comic standards, so it’s easy to see why neither made a big deal about the swap. What is a big deal, however, is what this could mean for the future.
Hopefully, the relationship between the two studios will blossom into something bigger. How cool would it be to see Wolverine brought over to the MCU? Or even Deadpool?
The chances of that happening are pretty close to zilch, especially since Wolverine and Deadpool are so important to Fox. But what if Fox gives Marvel permission to revive the Fantastic Four franchise?
Hopefully, negotiations for that are already happening.
