See full gallery on TechnoBuffaloRogue One: A Star Wars Story is shaping up to be a grittier, more realistic depiction of war in the Star Wars universe. That means soldiers storming beaches, espionage, and lots of angry politicians. It also means space battles, which will apparently be ample in the upcoming film.
One such battle, as revealed in more detail by Entertainment Weekly, occurs in orbit over Scarif, the movie’s tropical planet that features in the recent trailers.
Before the Rebels are able to set foot on the planet’s surface, they’ll need to destroy the Empire’s “Shield Gate,” a massive space station that restricts outsiders from entering the planet’s atmosphere. The reason? An important military complex has been built there that plays a crucial part in the story.
“The filmmakers describe it as a galactic Los Alamos, the top-secret desert town where scientists and engineers built the first nuclear bomb during World War II,” Entertainment Weekly’s story says.
“The Empire built a giant wall around the whole world—in the form of an energy field,” according to Entertainment Weekly. “It’s meant to keep outsiders away, and the Empire’s top secrets locked away beneath.”
One of those secrets, as we speculated, could be the Death Star plans, which provide the Rebels with key intel when plotting to destroy the planet-killing spaceship.
Less than a month to go
We’re officially less than a month away from Rogue One, which is shaping up to be one of the more exciting Star Wars entries in recent memory. Not only is the the approach different, but it looks downright gorgeous.
