War for the Planet of the Apes trailer brings the action

Caesar is back, and it looks as though we’re moving one step closer to a planet controlled by the apes.

War for the Planet of the Apes marks the third film in the successful prequel series that will eventually lead us into the original 1968 Planet of the Apes. Just how many films it will take us to get there is still unknown, but judging by comments made by the Colonel (Woody Harrelson), it sounds as though this could be a jumping off point should the filmmakers decide to end it here.

Where could a fourth Planet of the Apes film go?

While this film seems pretty final from a narrative perspective based on its title to the dialogue we hear in the trailer, there are still thousands of years to go before Taylor and his crew crash land in that lake in the original film. We probably won’t learn in this latest film why humans eventually lose the ability to speak, although the little girl being cared for by the Orangutan Maurice (Karin Konoval) certainly raises some questions.

Seeing as the second film, Dawn of the Planet of the Apes, made $710 million at the global box office, something seems to indicate that we’ll get another puzzle piece in the form of a fourth movie down the road.

War for the Planet of the Apes hits theaters on July 14, 2017.
