For the betterment of mankind, Google’s Sergie Brin, Facebook’s Mark Zuckerberg and venture capitalist Yuri Milner have formed an autobot alliance to sponsor the Breakthrough Prize Foundation, a nonprofit committed to “extending human life.”

The organization will hand out five annual prizes, each worth $3 million, to those who improve research related to medicine and biotech, among other fields. Perhaps the biggest benefit to the foundation is that there is no age requirement, meaning any mind young or old can participate.

“Our society needs more heroes who are scientists, researchers and engineers,” Zuckerberg wrote on Wednesday. “We need to celebrate and reward the people who cure diseases, expand our understanding of humanity and work to improve people’s lives.”

“Curing a disease should be worth more than a touchdown,” Brin said.

To kick off the first round of prizes, the foundation is actually recognizing 11 different award winners on Wednesday for their research; Zuckerberg, Brin and Milner have donated a combined $33 million for the winners.
