Carrie Fisher, best known for her role as Princes Leia Organa in the Star Wars films, has passed away at the age of 60.

Billie Lourd, Carrie Fisher’s daughter, released a statement Tuesday morning that her mother had passed away at 8:55am Pacific time this morning. Fisher had suffered a heart attack on Dec. 23 while flying from London to Los Angeles following a promotional tour for her latest book, The Princess Diarist.

Fisher, the daughter of Debbie Reynolds and Eddie Fisher, rose to fame in 1977 for her breakout role in Star Wars as Princess Leia Organa. She went on to play the character again in The Empire Strikes Back, Return of the Jedi and The Force Awakens. She had also already filmed scenes for Episode VIII due to be released in Dec. 2017. Her other film roles included The Blues Brothers, The Man with One Red Shoe, Hannah and her Sisters amongst others.

Outside of acting, Fisher focused heavily on her writing career penning best-selling books such as Surrender the Pink and Delusions of Grandma. Her autobiography, Wishful Drinking, was turned into a one-woman stage show and eventually also appeared on HBO.

Fisher is survived by her mother Debbie Reynolds, her daughter Billie Lourd and her companion dog, Gary.
