See full gallery on TechnoBuffaloWhile Ben Affleck has confirmed that he’s on-board to direct the standalone Batman movie, it sounds like he has some caveats to that plan. Whether or not The Batman happens depends on whether the script is up to snuff.
“…It’s not a set thing and there’s no script,” Affleck said in a new interview with The Guardian. Affleck was on press junkets for his new movie, Live by Night, when questions about The Batman inevitably came up.
“If it doesn’t come together in a way I think is really great, I’m not going to do it.”
Affleck has a lot of work ahead
Most everyone agrees that Batman v Superman wasn’t very good, but Affleck’s turn as Batman was one of the brighter spots in the movie for me. Most of my issues with his scenes come from the parts of the movie director Zack Snyder was in control of.
Where Bale skillfully portrayed a younger Batman in Batman Begins and The Dark Knight, Affleck brought both moments of quiet intelligence and dangerous physicality to the role that felt true to the character despite the movie’s best attempts to show otherwise.
In addition to being the current keeper of the cowl, Affleck is also a multi-award-winning director and screenwriter. Despite the problems the DC cinematic universe has had as it tries to find a tone somewhere between trying to remind us how cool The Dark Knight was and trying to imitate the unified look of the Marvel films, I’m willing to trust Affleck. If the executives will give him control over the film, he’s its best chance at coming out as a watchable product.
Both Wonder Woman and Justice League are set to come out in 2017, so Affleck has some time to figure out if he can make the movie work and whether or not he’ll be doing more damage control or less.
