Star Wars Episode VIII production video - 2

Now that Rogue One is in the rearview, Episode VIII director Rian Johnson has officially started talking about the upcoming sequel, which he said will primarily focus on the dynamic between Rey and Luke Skywalker.

As we heard before, Episode VIII will pick up right after the events of The Force Awakens, something that’s never been done in the Star Wars universe.

“I want to see the very next moment of what happens,” Johnson said, referring to the confrontation between Rey and Luke on Ahch-To. In this scene, Rey presents Luke with his father’s lightsaber, which she got from Maz Kanata. Luke doesn’t say anything but you can tell he’s not happy.

The dynamic between the two characters will be the movie’s big focus, as well as what Luke decides to do when confronted by Rey. Even though he barely featured in The Force Awakens, Luke’s presence was important to the film. He’ll be a much more central figure in the next movie.

Episode VIII will address what made him go into hiding in the first place, which is still a big mystery.

We’ll learn a lot more about Rey

In addition to learning about Luke, Episode VIII will reveal more about Rey, according to Johnson.

“She’s taking her first step to coming to terms with this thing inside her that she never knew was there and is just starting to reveal its potential,” Johnson said about Rey.

Whether Luke will help Rey harness these powers remains unclear. Rumor has it he tried teaching Kylo Ren, aka Ben Solo, the way of the Force, but he went rogue after a falling out. Chances are Luke will be very resistant to the idea of taking on another apprentice.

Star Wars: Episode VIII is scheduled for a release on Dec. 15, 2017.
