The first teaser for Pixar’s Cars 3 was unlike anything we’ve seen from the animation studio. Instead of the bright, cheery look we’ve come to expect, the footage was dark and a little scary. Certainly a far cry from what we saw from the first two movies.
To bring the point home that all is not well with Lightning McQueen (Owen Wilson), the previous teaser showed him involved in a major accident. The newest teaser replays that horrifying event, but it’s also full of new footage, providing us with a better idea of what the movie will be about.
Now considered part of an older generation of racers, Lightning McQueen is a shell of his former self, struggling to keep up with more technologically advanced newcomers. One such newcomer is Jackson Storm (Armie Hammer), a young rookie who is the new face of racing.
Here’s the movie’s official synopsis, which makes it sounds like a typical story about a washed-up champion looking to recapture past glory:
Blindsided by a new generation of blazing-fast racers, the legendary Lightning McQueen is suddenly pushed out of the sport he loves. To get back in the game he will need the help of eager young female race technician Cruz Ramirez. Proving that #95 isn’t through yet, he will test the heart of a champion on Piston Cup Racing’s biggest stage against his new rival, Jackson Storm.

It’s a familiar story
Even without seeing the film, we can pretty much guess the outcome of Cars 3: Lightning McQueen will persevere and teach audiences about the importance of friendship and never giving up. He might beat Jackson Storm, he might not. The important thing is learning to accept his situation and making the best of it.
Did I get that right?
In addition to Wilson returning as Lightning McQueen, Larry the Cable Guy will once again play Mater, while Bonnie Hunt returns as Sally Carrera.
Cars 3 is set to hit theaters on June 16, 2017.
