Lucasfilm has announced the official title for Star Wars Episode VIII, and it sure sounds like a bit of a downer.
On Monday Lucasfilm finally announced the official title of the eighth film in the Skywalker saga. This December, we can look forward to Star Wars: The Last Jedi hitting theaters. The latest film in the series was written and directed by Rian Johnson and will pick up where J.J. Abrams’ Star Wars: The Force Awakens left off.
What’s in a name?
The subtitles of the Star Wars films have been known to be a bit obtuse at times, and this one could have several meanings. In the last film, it was made fairly clear that Luke was the last Jedi in the galaxy, but if he begins training Rey in the ways of the Force as many have suspected he will, is she now the last Jedi? Does it imply the death of Luke? Could it be semantics and is Rey still just merely a Padawan learner? Could it mean Rey abandons her training? Or, even worse, succumbs to the lure of the Dark Side and joins Snoke and Kylo Ren?
Of course, seeing as Jedi is both singular and plural, it could even be a curve ball meaning both Rey and Luke are the Last Jedi.
The title is sure to spur many debates until Star Wars: The Last Jedi hits theaters on Dec. 15.
