The Guardians look up to all kinds of no good in the latest batch of images, which director James Gunn shared to his Facebook this week. While they aren’t all that different from what we’ve seen in the Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 trailers, they provide a high-res look at the revamped squad, which now includes Mantis (Pom Klementieff) and Yondu (Michael Rooker).
Notably missing from these photos is Kurt Russell’s Ego and Elizabeth Debicki’s Ayesha, the latter of whom is allegedly the movie’s big baddie; the former is supposedly Peter Quill’s father, which is odd because in the comics Ego is actually a living planet, not a person.
The teaser trailers have done a good job of showing off the locations and enemies the team will find themselves up against in the sequel. However, the footage we’ve seen has done nothing to set up the conflict of the film. Apparently, a job the team takes goes awry, which leads to an angry and vengeful Ayesha.
Here’s the movie’s official synopsis, which keeps things pretty general:
Set to the backdrop of ‘Awesome Mixtape #2,’ Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 continues the team’s adventures as they traverse the outer reaches of the cosmos. The Guardians must fight to keep their newfound family together as they unravel the mysteries of Peter Quill’s true parentage. Old foes become new allies and fan-favorite characters from the classic comics will come to our heroes’ aid as the Marvel cinematic universe continues to expand.
Baby Groot is freakin’ adorable
While we’re excited to see what new characters the sequel introduces, we still can’t get over Baby Groot. He stole the show in the most recent trailer and he looks absolutely adorable perched atop Yondu’s shoulder.
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 will hit theaters on May 5.
