Netflix has picked up its biggest video game license yet in a move that it guaranteed will please fans around the world. The company confirmed today that it secured the rights from Konami to start developing an original series based on the one and only Castlevania.

News is scant at the moment, and the announcement was simply tucked in at the bottom of a press release. However, comic writer Warren Ellis, of Transmetropolitan, Iron Man, and Fantastic Four fame, reportedly has penned the entire first season. No producers or studios have been announced as of yet.

All we have is this little bit of information.

Castlevania Season 1, Part 1 Coming to Netflix in 2017

Speculation says it will be an animated series

Naturally, rumors are quickly spreading about the nature of the series and the names behind it. Frederator Networks (Adventure Time) and producer Adi Shankar, who made the gritty Power Rangers fan film back in 2015, are both names in the pile thanks to Frederator’s Fred Seibert, who mentioned he was working on a video game series with Shankar based on a video game series.

We have a project right now that we’re doing that needs to go unnamed, based on one of the most world-famous video games of the last 30 years, that we’ve had in our shop for 12 years without being able to get it started. But there were great characters and a great story, and eventually we got it going.

That sounds fine, but I also want to know which Castlevania are we getting. Will it be more like the original 1980s games with whips and vampires, the Soma Cruz games taking place in the future, or… gulp… the MercurySteam Lords of Shadows games.

Please, one of the former two!
