Fans are still mourning the loss of Disney California Adventure’s Tower of Terror. But the ride’s replacement, Guardians of the Galaxy: Breakout, should be a worthy consolation.
Disney this week announced the ride will officially open on May 27, a few weeks after Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 hits theaters. The ride will be the first major Marvel infusion at Disney California Adventure, which will also include an Avengers Training Initiative and other themed experiences.
Here’s what to expect when the new ride officially opens:
Deep inside his fortress-like collection, the mysterious Taneleer Tivan (aka The Collector) is displaying his newest acquisitions, the Guardians of the Galaxy. They are trapped in customized display cases, suspended over a vast abyss. Unbeknownst to their unscrupulous captor, the intrepid Rocket has escaped and is enlisting the Collector’s VIP guests for help. Guests board a gantry lift, which launches them into a chaotic and hilarious adventure as they join Rocket in an attempt to break his fellow Guardians out of captivity.
The ride’s opening will kick of the “Summer of Heroes,” which will provide fans with the opportunity to meet characters from the Marvel Cinematic Universe, including Groot and Black Widow. Their appearances come in addition to Captain America and Spider-Man, both of whom fans can already meet.
Expect many more Marvel-themed attractions
Mission Breakout is Disney’s second Marvel-themed attraction, come on the heels of the Iron Man Experience in Hong Kong, which opened last year. In the future, Disney executives say they anticipate building an entire universe dedicated to Marvel at Disney California Adventure.
Along with Star Wars Land at Disneyland, which is also in Anaheim, fans have a lot to look forward to. Once Mission Breakout opens, we’ll be sure to check it out for a full writeup.
