The first few teasers Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales mostly showed off new villain Captain Salazar, familiar faces in Jack Sparrow, Captain Barbosa and the return of Orlando Bloom’s Will Turner. The last teaser was released just a month ago, but Disney released a new trailer that gives more details about Captain Salazar’s murky vendetta against Jack Sparrow.
There haven’t been any details as to why Captain Salazar was searching Jack Sparrow in the first Pirates teaser, but now we know the reason. Jack Sparrow is the one responsible for Salazar’s current ghostly self. In his previous life, Salazar was a Spanish captain that sought to rid the oceans of Pirates. But in his conquest to kill a young Jack Sparrow he met his demise.
“There was this boy. Jack Sparrow. He took everything from me, and filled me with rage,” utters Captain Salazar ominously as he recalls his past with Sparrow.
His fate didn’t end there though. While floating in the ocean after his death and the destruction of his ship, he suddenly wakes up as a ghostly pirate. He became the very thing he despised and began his new conquest to kill Jack Sparrow.
The most telling scene in the trailer is the flashback clip where a digitally-altered Johnny Depp as a young Jack Sparrow is shown as he sees Captain Salazar head towards his death. Jack Sparrow’s little-known past might be explored more in this movie. It’s uncovered territory past Pirates movies have only hinted at.
We also learned more about the other characters
The new trailer doesn’t show any scenes of Will Turner, but we do get a new look at Captain Barbosa and the new secondary storyline between Carina Smyth (Kaya Scoledario) and Henry (Brenton Thwaites). It looks like they will recreate the same love story Will Turner and Elizabeth Swann had in the first three Pirates movies. Their interaction does serve to give the movie some comedic relief.
Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales will be in theaters May 26.
