Fate of the Furious, the latest of the Fast and Furious films, hit theaters this weekend and in case you thought they might be starting to run out of gas, it turns out it’s quite the opposite. Fate pulled in an estimated $532.5 million worldwide over the weekend, according to The Hollywood Reporter. $100.2 million of that came from the United States. If those estimates hold out, Fate of the Furious squeezes by Star Wars: The Force Awakens, which held the record with $529 million previously.

Interestingly, the film pulled in less than its predecessor domestically. While Furious 7 launched to a $147 million domestic take, Fate‘s is about two-thirds of that.

Fate launched day-and-date globally, where Furious 7 launched a week later in China than it did in the United States. If that film had launched the same day globally, it might’ve grabbed the record and held onto it to this day.

We can probably expect a ninth one

“This franchise is showing no sign of wear and tear,” said Universal’s international distribution chief Duncan Clark. “Fate of the Furious is satisfying audiences on many different levels.”

The whole Fast and Furious series has grossed $3.9 billion globally according to The Hollywood ReporterFurious 7 accounts for $1.51 billion of that. If any of your friends asks “why are they still making these movies,” this is one very good reason. The cast will likely have to get tired of making these movies before the series comes to an end.
