The truth is still out there, and Fox is giving The X-Files another season to find it.
Fox announced on Thursday that The X-Files will return for a 10 episode season 11 in the 2017-2018 television season. Filming is expected to commence this summer with David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson reprising their roles as Fox Mulder and Dana Scully. Chris Carter will also return as executive producer on the event series.
This is a model we can live with
For some reason, the U.S. has always followed a very strict structure where TV shows must occur every season, must be a certain number of episodes and so on. Countries such as the U.K., on the other hand, take more of a, “everyone feel up to doing some more?” approach. The seasons – known as series over there – tend to be much shorter allowing the creative people behind the productions to go and work on other projects. It also allows for everyone to take a breather and assess what stories they wish to do.
The U.S. seems to be taking this approach a bit more. Season 10 of The X-Files was only six episodes due to Carter, Anderson and Duchovny’s schedules. This time they can fit in 10, so they’ll do 10. After that, who knows. Maybe they come back again, maybe they don’t. Perhaps it will be two years later, maybe a year later. Who knows, but if it works for everyone, why not?
