Star Wars: Episode IX has an official release date

Disney and Lucasfilm on Tuesday announced the official release date of Star Wars: Episode IX: May 24, 2019.

The timeframe is a slight curveball compared to previous Star Wars releases; The Force Awakens, Rogue One, and The Last Jedi all had December releases.

However, the untitled Han Solo project from directors Phil Lord and Christopher Miller is currently slated to come out in May of next year, which means we’ll get three Star Wars movies in a roughly 18 month span. You won’t hear any complaints from us.

Although, we wonder if a May timeframe means the Colin Trevorrow-directed project will be rushed. The Last Jedi originally had a May 2017 release date before being pushed back to the end of the year. Seeing as Disney and Lucasfilm have plans for several more spinoffs, perhaps the company wants to get the ball rolling to make room for other Star Wars anthology stories.

Placing a Star Wars movie in the summer timeframe will be a big test for the film. The fourth Avengers film is scheduled to come out in May of that year, as is the Minecraft movie. When you think about it, Episode IX is only two years away, which will go by in a flash.

If you’re a die hard Star Wars fan, once The Last Jedi hits theaters this December, you won’t have to wait too long before the newest trilogy wraps up.

Star Wars: Episode IX hits theaters on May 24, 2019.
