Ed Sheeran’s cameo in Game of Thrones sounds so boring

When Game of Thrones returns this summer, fans will be treated to a special cameo by British singer-songwriter Ed Sheeran. Unfortunately, his appearance sounds rather anticlimactic.

Spoilers ahead if you don’t want to know anything about the upcoming season.

In an interview with The Hits Radio, Sheeran talked briefly about his cameo, saying he shows up in a single scene with Ayra Stark (Maisie Williams).

You’d think the singer would play it up a bit; after all, this is Game of Thrones we’re talking about. Does she slit his throat? Does he help her on her journey? Nope, he simply sings a little tune—and that’s it.

“I just do a scene with Maisie,” Sheeran said on the radio show. “I sing a song and then she goes, ‘Oh, that’s a nice song.’”

…and then kills him. Just kidding, that doesn’t happen (unless he’s leaving information out.)

Cameos are typically pretty fun and provide audiences with a recognizable face while adding to the narrative in some way. Sheeran’s appearance in the show sounds rather gratuitous and, frankly, pretty pointless in the grand scheme of things.

Leave it to Sheeran to make a chance to be in Game of Thrones sound so… disappointing.

As IGN points out, Sheeran isn’t the first notable musician to appear in Game of Thrones. Coldplay’s Will Champion, Animal Circus’s Joel Fry, and members of Mastodon also had blink-and-you’ll-miss-them cameos.

Game of Thrones returns on July 16.
