There’s a shot in the latest Godzilla trailer, around the two minute mark, that’s so absolutely terrifying it made my stomach drop. Flares from military soldiers are shot up into the sky from atop a bettered skyscraper, and as they descend back toward Earth, an immense figure is illuminated in a freakish red glow (a foot, arm, shoulder?). It’s difficult to tell which part of the Godzilla monster we’re seeing, but he’s absolutely immense. And clearly not happy.
“The arrogance of man is thinking nature is in our control. And not the other way around.”
Marketed as a rebirth to the iconic Godzilla, the latest tale promises to show the legendary kaiju do battle against “malevolent creatures” set on wiping out humanity. From that description, it sounds like Godzilla is actually an unexpected ally, but the trailer certainly depicts the monster as an unstoppable demon. Maybe we’re the malevolent creatures? Plenty of new footage is shown off, including our best ever look at what the new Godzilla looks like. We also get the briefest of glimpses at another monster around the 1:30 mark.
There are some other plot hints as well included in the footage, with some mentions of Godzilla’s origins, and how mankind is responsible for creating such horrors. “In 1954, we awakened something.” That’s the year Godzilla made his original debut—exactly 60 years ago. Most recently in the U.S., Godzilla made an appearance in the 1998 reimagining, directed by Roland Emmerich, but it was critically panned, and overall didn’t feel like it was a very good homage to the source material. This latest effort, however, directed by Gareth Edwards, looks absolutely incredible.
The mood and overall tone of the trailers we’ve seen so far has been very bleak, accompanied by the same unsettling score that really helps build the tension.
“You have no idea what’s coming.”
On May 16, the world will find out.
