The first tease for the upcoming Netflix series based on Konami’s Castlevania games has arrived, alongside a release date for the show’s first episodes – July 7.
If you want to get to the meat of the trailer, skip to about 0:40. The trailer doesn’t want us to forget for even a second that Castlevania was a Nintendo game, and hovers on that for a while before letting us look at the actual show. Which, seriously, looks really good.
No sparkling on these vampires
Here’s the official synoposis, via Netflix:
Inspired by the classic video game series, Castlevania is a dark medieval fantasy following the last surviving member of the disgraced Belmont clan, trying to save Eastern Europe from extinction at the hand of Vlad Dracula Tepe himself.
Castlevania is being produced by Frederator Studios (Adventure Time) and written by Warren Ellis (Excalibur, Transmetropolitan), and executive produced by Adi Shankar (Dredd) among others.
Shankar previously described the show as “Castlevania done very much in the vein of Game of Thrones,” and what we’re getting in July is four 30-minute episodes that are being billed as “Season 1, Part 1.” That makes me think of another of Netflix’s animated shows, Voltron Legendary Defender, which had a gap of just six months between the first and second seasons and an expected gap of 9 months between the second and upcoming third season. I’d assume we’ll see something similar with Castlevania.
The trailer is looking gorgeous so far, with a heavily anime-inspired look and plenty of blood. I can’t help but think of anime classics like Vampire Hunter D, and Castlevania is going to be high on my list when it hits on July 7.
