Clearly, the iPhone 7 comes out on top… right? No? Of course, it doesn’t! Still, YouTuber Potato Jet goes shot for shot and compares the camera on the iPhone 7 to an $82,101 Arri Alexa package.
This isn’t really so much a “which camera is better” video. Instead, it clearly illustrates what types of advantages filmmakers have when they choose a more robust piece of hardware. There’s no way a phone camera can compete with industry-grade tech (yet), but the gains the film industry makes for shelling out more money seem well worth it.
This Arri Alexa is used by Hollywood’s best talent on films like The Revenant, Wolf of Wall Street, Game of Thrones, Get Out, Avengers and loads, loads more. It’s the standard for a good reason.
It’s not just that it has more pixels, or whatever, it’s that the video produced by the camera offers better quality and way more flexibility for post-production.
As good as the cameras are in our phones, iPhone or otherwise, the tech has a long way to go to reach what Hollywood’s capable of.
