You can now enjoy your favorite tracks offline when using the Spotify app for Samsung Gear S3. The feature enables users to take their music with them when they go for a run or hit the gym, without having to carry their smartphone.
Spotify has been supporting Samsung watches since the Gear S2, allowing subscribers to control music playback from their wrist. But without a connected smartphone, the app wasn’t much use. That’s changed now that Spotify for the Gear S3 gives you the ability to download tracks, albums, and playlists and store them locally.
This makes the Gear S3 series (including the Classic and Frontier) the first smartwatches to offer Spotify’s offline playback feature. To enjoy it, you’ll need the Spotify app on your smartphone, as well as the companion app for Gear S3, which can be obtained through Gear Manager. You can then specify what music you want to save locally.
But you’ll have to be careful about how much you download, since the Gear S3 — like most other smartwatches — has just 4GB of internal storage. It might be a good idea to create a single workout playlist, which you can later add to and subtract from when it needs freshening up.
Spotify is also working on offline playback for Apple Watch. It has teamed up with a third-party developer to deliver this functionality, but it’s not yet clear when it will be available on watchOS.
