Marvel’s Spider-Man plan doesn’t include a third solo movie

We’re just a few days away from Spider-Man: Homecoming hitting theaters, which we got a chance to check out ahead of time. But now the attention turns to where Spidey headed in the Marvel universe. Marvel president Kevin Feige actually shed some light on the subject and revealed one key detail—as of now, Marvel isn’t planning on making Spider-Man: Homecoming 3.

In an interview with the Toronto Sun, Feige opened up about Spider-Man’s character arc in the Marvel universe. Among the notable details he revealed was the current “five-story journey” they are developing for Peter Parker.

We are looking at a five-movie storyline—Civil War, Homecoming, Avengers: Infinity War, untitled Avengers, Homecoming 2—or whatever we end up calling it—as an amazing five-story journey for Peter Parker.

Notably missing among the list of movies Feige mentions is Spider-Man: Homecoming 3. We doubt it would actually be called that, but nevertheless, as of right now, Spider-Man’s solo journey in the MCU will only go two movies deep.

That isn’t all that surprising. You have to remember Spider-Man is on loan from Sony, and the studio is already gearing up to setup its own Spidey universe. This is probably why Marvel is focusing on integrating Spider-Man in the Avenger movies first and putting the solo Spidey movies on the back burner.

Either way, we hope Marvel and Sony can extend their partnership to include a third Spidey movie starring Tom Holland. Sony already mismanaged two Spider-Man franchises. Might as well let Marvel completely course correct the character with key roles in the Avengers movies and a solo trilogy.

Feige also opened up about how important Spider-Man will be to the MCU at the beginning of Phase 4. Peter Parker’s spunky personality is an important lens to experience the aftermath of the ultimate Avenger battles. This is the reason Spider-Man: Homecoming 2 (or whatever it’s called) will kick off Phase 4 right after the fourth Avengers movie in 2019.
