Spider-Man: Homecoming is the latest take on the character we’ve come to know and love over the past decade. The new take on the character features a high-tech suit that has been provided by Tony Stark. It makes sense then that the suit has a J.A.R.V.I.S.-like assistant, and after some debate, we now know exactly who voice that assistant in the movie.
Note: There are some minor spoilers ahead.
In Spider-Man: Homecoming, Tony Stark equipped that suit with a “Training Wheels Protocol” that we learned from a trailer. What was revealed in the movie was Peter Parker manages to bypass the safety protocol and gain access to the suit’s assistant. At first he calls her “Suit Lady” but eventually names her Karen. And it turns out Oscar-winner Jennifer Connolly was the one who provided her voice.
Connolly is no stranger to Marvel movies. She starred in Ang Lee’s much-maligned Hulk alongside Eric Bana, but this is her first role in a MCU movie. But Connolly’s biggest connection to the MCU is her marriage to J.A.R.V.I.S. (and Vision) himself, Paul Bettany.
Jon Watts, the director of Spider-Man: Homecoming cracked some jokes to io9 about the decision to cast Connolly as Karen.
“It is pretty neat that Karen is married to Jarvis in real life,” revealed director Jon Watts to io9. “Maybe we’re setting up a Vision spinoff.”
There were some questions as to whether Connolly actually voiced Karen due to a mix up with another voice, that of Friday—Tony Stark’s latest AI assistant. But the mix-up was eventually clarified: Connolly voices Karen and Kerry Condon voices Friday.
Spider-Man: Homecoming opens this Friday, July 7.
