If you grew up watching the previous three live-action Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles movies, they probably hold a special place in your heart. TMNT is one of the most beloved franchises in history, spawning cartoons, video games, and a ton of amazing toys. But the cast of characters you grew up loving have been completely changed in the latest live-action interpretation, and they look… scary?
After months and months of silence and a few unverified leaks, the first trailer for the Michael Bay-produced TMNT reboot has been released. Megan Fox as the titular April O’Neil? Odd. The trailer gives us some backstory on where the turtles originate from, and the motivations of the main characters. We get to see the turtles in action, though we only get a brief moment of Michelangelo actually speaking; part of the charm of the TMNT universe is how the characters talk and interact like normal humans, so that will play a huge part in whether this reboot is successful or not.
The turtles still sound like teenage surfer dudes. But they certainly don’t look like the turtles of the 80s and 90s.
“Heros are not born,” says William Fichtner’s character, who is slated to become The Shredder. It’s unclear if Fichtner’s character meant to “create” the TMNT, or just The Shredder, but we all know that The Shredder is definitely no hero, despite his monologue. We haven’t seen a live-action TMNT since 1993, but we’ve seen the gang in a new animated movie and cartoon series. It will certainly be strange to see them back on the big screen, under the watchful eye of Michael Bay. The movie is scheduled to come out on Aug. 8.
