Captain America: The Winter Soldier had the biggest ever opening weekend for a film opening in April, besting the record previously held by the most recent (and awesome) Fast and Furious movie. That, obviously, has given executives and those involved confidence to announce the release date for the third movie: May 6, 2016. Mark your calendars, because Cap is ready to make his triumphant return to the big screen. But not before the next Avengers film—Avengers: Age of Ultron—hits theaters on May 1, 2015.
Being so far ahead of the next release, details are considerably light about Cap’s next outing. Many have praised The Winter Soldier for its incredible action set pieces and ability to humanize Steve Rodgers, who has struggled to assimilate with present day after what happened to him in the first Captain America movie. I have yet to see the second movie, but I hear it’s terrific. Moviegoers obviously felt the same way, skyrocketing the movie to the top of the box office.
I imagine it’ll hold that spot for the coming weeks, though a new Godzilla film is just around the corner, so we’ll see how Cap responds to the reboot of one of the industry’s most beloved kaiju.
