It’s been eight long years since Avatar hit theaters and wowed us with Pandora’s world. James Cameron has been developing four sequels for a while now, bringing on board many of the original cast to reprise their roles. One such actor was Stephen Lang, who portrayed the villainous Colonel Miles Quaritch, and Cameron just confirmed he’ll back as the primary villain for all four sequels.
Spoilers ahead
At the start of Avatar, Quaritch is the head of security on Pandora but drastically pivots into a monstrous corporate head hell-bent on abusing the planet’s resources. A big battle ensues that ultimately ends with Neytiri (Zoe Saldana) putting two arrows through Quaritch’s chest. But apparently resurrection is normal on Pandora, because Quaritch is coming back.
James Cameron opened up about Colonel Miles Quaritch’s return in the Avatar sequels in an interview with Empire.
“The interesting conceit of the Avatar sequels is it’s pretty much the same characters,” revealed Cameron. “There are new characters and a lot of new settings and creatures, so I’m taking characters you know and putting them in unfamiliar places and moving them on this greater journey. But it’s not a whole bunch of new characters every time. There’s not a new villain every time, which is interesting. Same guy. Same motherfucker through all four movies.”
The direction James Cameron is going is actually quite interesting. Most movie franchises with multiple sequels in development like to march out a new bigger, badder villain for each sequel, but Avatar is taking the opposite approach. The dynamic of having a major villain with an overarching storyline for every sequel sounds very intriguing and refreshing.
Sadly, we’ll have to wait many years to see exactly what new ideas James Cameron has come up with as our return to Pandora won’t happen until 2020 when Avatar 2 hits theaters.
